Walking/Hiking the Sunshine Coast
From
Sechelt, take a short drive north on the Sunshine Coast Highway. Just
past Halfmoon Bay turn left on Brook Road and follow it for a couple of
kilometres and you will reach Smuggler's Cove Marine Park. The walk is a
gentle hike through evergreen forest to the waterfront. You then follow
along the Cove and the path then does a loop around a spit of land.
The cove is visited not just for its beauty, but also the protection it
affords boats. In Summer this small piece of water is packed
with boats, large and small. The walk itself takes about 60-80 minutes.
There is a great spot to sit down on the rocks looking out to Vancouver
Island at the furthest point of the walk.
Francis Point
From
Sechelt, taking the Sunshine Coast highway, drive north to Madeira Park
and Pender Harbour. Turn left on Francis Peninsula Road (just before you
reach the main turning for Pender Harbour). Just over a kilometre on
this road and you turn left again on to Merrill Road. The entrance to
the Francis Point Marine Park is only a few hundred yards down this
road.
The first 10 minutes or so of the walk is spent in an amazing
evergreen forest - Some of the most amazing trees! At the end of this, you reach the waters
edge. If you turn right, you quickly reach a stunning viewpoint, looking
out on Vancouver Island and the islands in between. If you turn left you
are taken along a gentle path to the rocky waterfront. Give yourself 40
-60 minutes.
Caren Provincial Park
Northwest of Sechelt, this park protects the last of the Caren
forest. This area has some of the oldest cedar and western hemlock and
balsam on the coast. The extensive logging and network provides easy
back country travel with great views of the ocean and coast. Hikes will
take several hours to several days, come prepared!
Kinnickinnick Park
A small park close to town, it is across Sechelt Inlet from our B&B.
It offers a series of easy walking trails
that are clearly marked.
Snickett Park and Pebble Beach
Here is a pleasant boardwalk in Sechelt, along the waterfront,
looking out to Vancouver Island. A great spot to enjoy a picnic lunch that you've picked up in town.
Tetrahedron Provincial Park Trails
An extensive network of alpine hiking, biking and cross-country ski
trails. This park also contains a series of small mountain lakes which
provide good fishing opportunities and back country huts. Make sure you
have 4 wheel drive to get to the trail head.
